Playin With Belles

A horse, even though a large animal, is not immune to the venom of a rattlesnake, and it is compounded by the fact most bites to horses are on the muzzle or head.

Play With Belles, owned by Larry Yates, presented to us with tremendous swelling of the muzzle through the throatlatch.  Five days of high dose steroids and antibiotics along with opening several abscesses and battling an anaerobic bacterial infection (set up by venom and fang punctures) Bell was nowhere near normal but was stable enough to return home and continue healing.

Anyone in a high risk area would be advised to  horse vaccinate with the Red Rock Biologics Rattlesnake Vaccine; although the vaccine won’t prevent the bite it will lessen the severity of the reaction to the venom.
